Matthias Matzke 2013Gert Wantenaar (NL)

Gert Wantenaar is best known as an accordionist. He started playing this instrument when he was eight years old. At the Hilversum Conservatory, Gert also started playing the piano.
Due to his broad interests, he has practiced many different music styles, also as a keyboard player/organist. Gert graduated in accordion classical music with Henny Vels and in piano light music with Henk Elkerbout.

At the age of eighteen, he was asked to join the tango orchestra “El Choclo”, which at the time was composed of all kinds of musicians from the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Then Gert rediscovered the Argentine tango, but also played that music in that orchestra on the accordion.
Later, he was asked again for the new start of the “Malando Orchestra” as the first accordionist. In this orchestra, he also got the opportunity to play the bandoneon. This small instrument with its beautiful characteristic sound is the soul of the Argentine tango.
Inspired by this special sound, Gert founded his own quartet under the name “Tango Aliado”. With this quartet he regularly gives concerts and has recorded two CDs.

Gert is a much sought-after musician because of his versatility. He has played with Brigitte Kaandorp, Mathilde Santing, Robert Long, Henny Vrienten, Huub van der Lubbe, Lenny Kuhr and Margriet Eshuis, among others.
Gert worked with Mathilde Santing for more than ten years and he also went to New York with her a few times.
Since 2003, Gert has been to Japan five times and also to China five times for a tour with the Malando orchestra. There were also tours through Germany and Finland.

Gert has also done many children's performances at schools in Amsterdam.
Gert has played a lot with the gipsy jazz quartet "Pigalle 44" of master guitarist Reinier Voet. There is a lot of room for improvisation in this music.
This also applies to the music of "I Compani", the ensemble led by the Nijmegen saxophonist Bo de Graaf.

Gert played as a keyboard player in the musical “Cats” and as an accordionist in the musical “Ciske de Rat”. He also played in the musical “De man van la Mancha” and the musical “De Hospita” which was written especially for Simone Kleinsma.

Gert was musical director and arranger for the show “Sonneveld voor Altijd”, an ode to the unforgettable Wim Sonneveld, and for two shows directed by Haye van der Heiden: “Lichtjes in je ogen” and “De Darmdialogen”.
Gert also provided arrangements for the show “Gedeelde Smart” by Brigitte Kaandorp and Jenny Arean. He also played the accordion and bandoneon during this tour.
